Fire Extinguisher Foam – STSM 5000 Refill
This AFFF extinguishant solution is the refill foam used for the STSM 5000 hyperbaric foam fire extinguisher. The STSM 5000 uses non-toxic aqueous foam for Class A and B fires and supports both intermittent and continuous discharge.
For each STSM 5000 refill, add 300 ml of extinguishant solution, Part No. STSM 5001, followed by 4.7 litres of water. Together, these quantities provide the extinguisher’s stated 5-litre extinguishant volume. The STSM 5000 has a total cylinder volume of 7 litres and a maximum working pressure of 100 bar.
Refilling the STSM 5000
Before starting the refill procedure, make sure the extinguisher is completely discharged. Remove the discharge hose from the discharge valve, then remove the discharge valve from the cylinder. Rinse both the discharge valve and cylinder with fresh water.
Pour 300 ml of AFFF extinguishant solution into the cylinder and add 4.7 litres of water. Clean the discharge valve O-ring and seat with a clean, lint-free cloth. Lightly lubricate the O-ring with Christo lube or Krytox before replacing the discharge valve.
Connect charging adaptor Part No. STSM 25003. Hold the trigger open and carefully charge the extinguisher to a maximum of 100 bar. Use a gas compatible with the chamber atmosphere, with bottom mix, helium or nitrogen specified as applicable. The oxygen content of the charge gas must not exceed 21% by volume.
After charging, close the trigger and fit the safety pin. Vent and remove the charging adaptor, then check for leaks using a soapy water solution. Replace the discharge hose to complete the recharging procedure.
For the Hyperbaric STSM 5000
The STSM 5000 has a maximum working depth of 450 metres and an operating temperature range of 2°C to 50°C. Before a dive, the charge pressure should measure between 70 and 100 bar. For dives deeper than 200 metres, the charge pressure must measure between 95 and 100 bar.
The extinguisher is intended for Class A and B fires and must not be used on electrical fires over 24 volts. Its refillable design allows the AFFF extinguishant solution to form part of the stated maintenance and recharging process.
Handling and Maintenance
After skin contact with the extinguishant, wash the affected area with water. Rinse contaminated soaked clothing again. After eye contact, flush the eye with plenty of water for at least 10 minutes. After swallowing, wash the mouth with water.
Maintenance must follow applicable national regulations. The label specifies annual function testing by discharging and internal and external visual examination. Two-yearly maintenance also includes servicing the discharge valve, hydrostatically pressure testing the cylinder, calibrating the contents pressure indicator and refilling the extinguisher ready for service.
